Sometimes strength training isn’t just about lifting weights. Sometimes all you need is your body. Period.
I have been getting more and more into calisthenics lately due to the huge crazy over the Progressive Calisthenics Certification(PCC) Workshop, sponsored by Dragon Door. By now, you all should have seen the promotional video that came out for this amazing workshop. In case you missed it, here it is again!
Unbelievable! Amazing! Unbelievably amazing!
While most people that are familiar with calisthenic training cite Convict Conditioning as the Holy Bible of bodyweight training, I started diving into more bodyweight work due to an amazing read called Pushing the Limits by Al Kavadlo. In this book, Al Kavadlo goes over everything from basic push-ups and body weigh squats to mesmerizing one arm bridges and hand stands. This book will also break down every single progressive exercise you will need in order to strategically build the proper foundation for your overall strength. If you are looking for a comprehensive course in body weight training, be sure to check out Pushing the Limits by Al Kavadlo.
Are you curious about what a body weight only workout looks like? Here’s my own little body weight workout you can try at home for some serious strength and conditioning.
Burgher’s Body Bananza Workout
Complete 5 rounds of the following.
10 Push ups
10 body weight squats
10 Plyometric Push Ups
10 Pistol squats (5 each leg, alternate leg after each squat)
Speaking of calisthenics, I have been working on my Elbow Lever after re-reading Al Kavadlo’s book “Rasing the Bar”. While visiting a friend last weekend, I was finally able to complete the elbow lever on top of a coffee table. Just goes to show you that with proper practice, you can achieve amazing feats of strength! For more on how to master the elbow lever, check out Al’s book “Raising the Bar” as well!
That’s all I have for yinz today! As always remember to eat smart, train hard, and enjoy your life!
